TCPP and TDCPP are both chlorinated phosphate ester flame retardants used primarily in polyurethane foam. They share the same general FR mechanism but have meaningfully different regulatory profiles, efficiency levels, and application ranges. The selection between them is typically driven by performance requirements, Prop 65 exposure, and customer specification.
Both TCPP and TDCPP function through gas-phase chlorine radical scavenging during combustion. During a fire event, the chlorinated ester vaporizes and releases HCl, which interrupts the flame propagation chain reaction. Both are reactive-type FRs that integrate into the polyurethane matrix during the PU reaction, providing durable and non-migratory flame retardancy. Neither product contributes to char formation or smoke suppression. For those properties, a synergist (ATO, zinc stannate) or co-additive (MPP, APP) is required.
