PVC Solvent Cement: ASTM D2564 Compliant Cements & Primers

ASTM D2564 PVC cements and ASTM F656 primers for pipe, spa and pool manufacturing, irrigation, plumbing, and industrial construction. Clear heavy body, gray, purple primer, and transition cement grades. U.S. supply. Low-VOC options.

Flamisol supplies ASTM D2564 compliant PVC solvent cements and ASTM F656 primers for industrial PVC pipe joining applications. The product line covers the standard grade range required by U.S. plumbing codes and industrial specifications: clear heavy body and gray PVC pressure cements, purple primer for surface preparation, and transition cement for ABS-to-PVC joints under ASTM D3138. Low-VOC formulations are available for California and other VOC-restricted markets.

Available Grades

ASTM Standards Coverage

Flamisol’s PVC solvent cement portfolio aligns with the full ASTM standards stack covering PVC pipe joining for pressure and DWV applications:

  • ASTM D2564: Specification for solvent cements used on PVC pressure pipe and fittings. Defines viscosity ranges, dissolved resin content, solvent composition, and joint performance requirements.
  • ASTM F656: Specification for primers used with solvent cements on PVC pressure pipe. Purple color allows visual verification of primer application by building inspectors.
  • ASTM D2855: Standard practice for the two-step process of making joints with PVC pipe and fittings (primer + cement procedure).
  • ASTM D3138: Specification for transition cement used to bond ABS to PVC in DWV plumbing systems. Distinguishable green color identifies transition joints.

VOC Compliance

California Air Resources Board (CARB) and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) limit VOC content in plastic pipe cements. Standard PVC cement is limited to 510 g/L, primers to 550 g/L, and ABS cement to 325 g/L. Flamisol supplies both standard and low-VOC formulations:

  • Standard formulations: balanced solvent blend, broad temperature operating range
  • Low-VOC formulations: meet CARB and SCAQMD limits while maintaining joint integrity
  • VOC content is confirmed on the product TDS and SDS for each grade
  • Most U.S. states adopt CARB/SCAQMD limits; verify with your state Department of Environmental Quality
