IC-Sphere XT-220 is a thermoplastic expandable microsphere composed of an acrylonitrile copolymer shell encapsulating a hydrocarbon blowing agent. On heating above the activation temperature, the shell softens and the hydrocarbon vaporizes, expanding the sphere to 3–5 times its original diameter. The result is controlled density reduction, dimensional stability, and improved processing characteristics in the host matrix. Flamisol supplies XT-220 DDP with full technical documentation.

How XT-220 Works

XT-220 functions through controlled thermal activation of its encapsulated blowing agent:

  • Shell softening at activation temperature: Above 166°C, the acrylonitrile copolymer shell becomes pliable, allowing controlled expansion under the vapor pressure of the encapsulated hydrocarbon.
  • Hydrocarbon volatilization: The encapsulated blowing agent vaporizes within the softened shell, driving uniform sphere expansion to 3–5 times the original diameter.
  • Cured cellular structure: On cooling, the expanded shell solidifies, locking in the hollow cellular structure and providing permanent density reduction, dimensional stability, and acoustic dampening in the cured matrix.

Handling and Processing Guidance

XT-220 should be incorporated into the host formulation at temperatures well below its activation temperature to avoid premature expansion or shell rupture:

  • Mixing temperature should stay below 80°C during incorporation
  • Use low to moderate shear; high-shear mixing can mechanically rupture the shell
  • Typical loadings: 0.5–3% by weight of the total formulation
  • Storage at room temperature in original packaging; avoid prolonged exposure above 50°C
  • Activation in production occurs at the cure or processing temperature, not during mixing

XT-220 is classified as non-hazardous and non-regulated under U.S. DOT and IATA transport regulations, simplifying domestic and international shipping logistics.
