Thermoplastic expandable microspheres for controlled density reduction in plastics, coatings, automotive, and lightweight composites. Initial foaming 166–175°C. DDP supply, non-hazardous transport.
IC-Sphere XT-220 is a thermoplastic expandable microsphere composed of an acrylonitrile copolymer shell encapsulating a hydrocarbon blowing agent. On heating above the activation temperature, the shell softens and the hydrocarbon vaporizes, expanding the sphere to 3–5 times its original diameter. The result is controlled density reduction, dimensional stability, and improved processing characteristics in the host matrix. Flamisol supplies XT-220 DDP with full technical documentation.

XT-220 functions through controlled thermal activation of its encapsulated blowing agent:
| Application | XT-220 Fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PVC plastisols | ✓ Strong | Activation temperature matches PVC plastisol cure profiles (150–180°C) |
| Automotive underbody coatings | ✓ Strong | Weight reduction, sound dampening, sealing performance |
| Synthetic cork and flooring | ✓ Strong | Density control, texture engineering, lightweight composites |
| Sealants and mastics | ✓ Strong | Shrinkage reduction, density control, gap-filling capability |
| Epoxy putties and composites | ✓ Good | Lightweight filler, post-cure dimensional stability |
| Water-based coatings | ✓ Good | Texture engineering, density control after thermal cure |
| Polyurethane elastomers (specialty) | ⚠ Conditional | Suitable where exotherm stays below T-max; not for high-exotherm SPF |
XT-220 should be incorporated into the host formulation at temperatures well below its activation temperature to avoid premature expansion or shell rupture:
XT-220 is classified as non-hazardous and non-regulated under U.S. DOT and IATA transport regulations, simplifying domestic and international shipping logistics.
