What Happened to ATO Supply?
Antimony trioxide (Sb₂O₃) has been a workhorse flame retardant synergist for decades: inexpensive, effective in halogenated systems, and reliably available. That reliability is gone.
China accounts for over 80% of global antimony production and more than 90% of refined antimony compounds. In 2024, China’s Ministry of Commerce classified antimony as a strategic material and imposed export licensing requirements. Controls tightened further through 2025, driving prices to multi-year highs and extending lead times to months.
Four Drivers of the Current Disruption
- 01China export controls
Strategic material classification → export licensing requirements → supply quotas.
- 02Mine Curtailments Reduced Global Output, Including Myanmar
Key mines reduced output due to environmental enforcement and declining ore grades. Myanmar, one of the largest global sources of antimony ingots, has seen additional disruptions from shortages of crude oil and electricity needed to operate processing facilities, with several mines and plants reportedly suspending operations in early 2026. Antimony metal prices rose 5.1% in a single session following these reports.
- 03Regulatory pressure
IARC Group 2B classification driving specification reviews in automotive, W&C, and electronics.
- 04U.S. trade policy
Broad tariff escalation and strategic minerals policy have further reduced import economics for U.S. buyers.
What Should Compounders Do Right Now?
- 1.Forward purchasing:
ATO pricing is elevated and volatile. Forward POs with confirmed delivery dates provide cost certainty. Contact us for availability.
- 2.Zinc synergist evaluation:
FL-ZS, FL-ZHS, and FL-ZB are proven commercial synergists supplied DDP by a US-based supplier. Most applications allow partial or full substitution: though formulation testing is required.
- 3.Specification review:
For applications where ATO is purely a synergist, re-running fire performance testing with zinc alternatives may allow a specification update that removes ATO dependency entirely.
